Bearing a striking resemblance in shape and style to the Mayle Billie Doux bag, the Yves Saint Laurent Sac 57 is a recent edition to this French fashion house’s collection. At almost 33cm wide and just over 27cm high it’s an average sized bag. Controversy over designs aside, the YSL Sac 32 and 57 has a lovely understated black canvas lining. It quite simply closes via the gold top zip and the two 10cm sturdy drop handles make it incredibly easy to carry. There are no detachable shoulder straps, extra buckle detailing or front pockets here. The focus is entirely on that Y shaped stitching on the face of the bag’s body which divides it neatly up into three sections. This YSL bag is the kind that’s likely to look great with something a comfortable but smart. The Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche is worth considering too.
Without wishing to speculate (ok, maybe we do) it seems that one of YSL’s signature features is the Y-shaped stitching so we’re guessing Stefano Pilati (the current designer for YSL) has the upper hand there. Marc Jacobs Blake Shoulder Bag
Ivory, black and plum were the official colours chosen for the Marc Jacobs bag but it has since become a bag of many disguises. Depending on which colour you’re going for, the Marc Jacobs Blake can be a bit of a statement. The ivory gives an air of wealth while the pastel pink and baby blue are pure, unadulterated showbiz. What we like about this little Prada clutch is how simple it is. Luckily for us ladies there’s a huge range of just those bags, which come under the ball-park of Radley bag. We say ballpark because there as so many of them, and that’s a good thing. The Radley messenger bag also known as the ‘Pocket bag’ is probably the most practical of the whole collection, as it fits across the body, is made of smooth (easily cleaned) leather, has two zipped pockets and an adjustable strap. It’s similar in style to the Prada messenger bag, just with a more modern design. You can also get it is a whole array of different colours, and two different sizes so it’s pretty much customisable. It’s a slightly more sporty-looking bag, but the Scottie dog Radley tag softens it all up and the leather makes it look very chic. This is the kind of bag you could wear with jeans and trainers and still look very much the part. No wonder Radley bags are so popular here in the UK.
One bag that we sorely miss from the Radley online collection is the ‘Millie’ Radley tiki shoulder bag. It is cute, rounded black, pink or white leather, with a gorgeous flower and wooden bead keychain/fascinator around the handle. We’re not sure why it’s been taken off, but for one in a similar size but an even cuter design try the soft leather ‘Hylda’. It’s also got a lot of pockets and a sturdy wooden frame at the opening, which you can feel under your arm and are very unlikely to drop. DKNY Bag Is So Versatile But…
If we’re totally honest, not much has come out of DKNY in the way of bags for about a year now. A great era for the DKNY handbag scene was very early in 2007 when the ‘Urban Fusion’ DKNY shoulder bag was released onto the shelves. This was a compact tote with everything you would need for use in an inner city situation and it’s just as practical as a DKNY messenger bag might be, for example if it were a cross body which didn’t need to be held. Instead it offers a great deal of pockets and compartments as well as being lightweight but sturdy at the same time. The cool black leather, drop down handles and thick decorative straps on either side give it an air of assuredness which goes down a treat. We don’t care that it’s possibly a little ‘sultry 80’s tomboy’. In fact, that might just be a good thing. You may also consider getting a DKNY purse to complete the collection.
The DKNY Urban Fusion tote comes across as a bag which you need to have an attitude to pull off, but just give it a go and you might be surprised at how a little pussycat can be transformed into a lioness with one simple bag swap. Its sister bag, the Prada nylon hobo bag looks very much the same and they can be hard to distinguish, but they do have different handles (the hobo has handles reaching from one corner of the bag to the other; much like a boat-necked dress, whereas the handles on the crispy tote are further in towards the middle of the body).
